How to keep a fresh bouquet looking good for longer
Simple tricks to make your bouquet last days longer: the cut, the water, where to place it and the mistakes that shorten its life.

A good bouquet can last one to two weeks if you look after it well. The difference between three days and ten comes down to a few gestures. Here are the ones that really work.
Cut the stems at an angle
Before putting them in the vase, cut 2-3 cm off each stem at an angle with a clean knife or scissors. The angled cut increases the surface the flower drinks through and stops the stem sitting flat on the bottom. Repeat every 2-3 days.

Clean water, no submerged leaves
Remove any leaves below the waterline: if they rot, they foul the water and shorten the bouquet's life. Change the water every two days and rinse the vase. Cloudy water is enemy number one.
Where to place the bouquet
- Away from heat sources (radiators, direct sun, appliances).
- Away from the fruit bowl: ripening fruit releases ethylene and wilts flowers.
- Somewhere cool, especially at night.
Mistakes that shorten its life
- Leaving the bouquet without water for hours after buying it.
- Never re-cutting the stems.
- A dirty vase with residue from the previous bouquet.
Frequently asked questions
Does the little sachet of flower food help? Yes, it feeds the flower and slows bacteria. If you don't have one, a home trick is a drop of heavily diluted bleach or a little sugar, changing the water often.
Why do the petals drop so fast? Usually heat or dirty water. Move the bouquet away from heat and refresh the water.
